The Most Interesting Part of Being an IRS Agent

Lessons from My Time as an IRS Revenue Agent

Ever wondered what it’s like to work for the IRS? As a former IRS revenue agent, I’ve had the unique opportunity to glimpse into the lives and businesses of countless individuals. In this short article, I’d like to quickly share my perspective on the most fascinating part of being an IRS agent—and why the experience was so valuable.

A Peek into the Financial Lives of Others

During my time at the IRS, I audited small businesses and individuals, which gave me an insider’s look at their financials. Most people don’t share their tax returns with friends or family, but as an IRS agent, I got to see it all—income, expenses, charitable giving, and more!.

I’ve audited businesses as diverse as:

  • A travel agency specializing in luxury fishing trips.
  • A dad renting out bouncy houses on weekends.
  • Farmers running multi-generational operations in rural America.
  • Teachers with summer lawn mowing businesses.
  • Manufacturing businesses making critical parts for our economy.

Each audit revealed the incredible variety of ways people earn a living and run businesses. Whether it was blue-collar tradespeople like plumbers and electricians or tech entrepreneurs selling startups for tens of millions, I saw how hard work and creativity can lead to success.

Eye-Opening Lessons from Uncommon Businesses

Some audits truly expanded my perspective on what’s possible in the business world. I audited someone who used a 1031 Exchange to own a sports arena and learned about the intricacies of federal tax law. I also met high-achieving professionals from all walks of life, like contractors who had built thriving companies or weekend entrepreneurs who were on the verge of quitting their day jobs to pursue their side gigs full-time.

This exposure was invaluable—it not only taught me about tax law but also about life, determination, and the myriad ways people pursue their passions. I’m sure this exposure helped lead me to owning a Christmas tree farm.

Why IRS Experience is Invaluable

For anyone considering a career in tax, law, or accounting, I highly recommend starting with government experience, especially with the IRS. Here’s why:

  1. Responsibility from Day One: After a few months of training, I was given my own caseload. While I had a manager for guidance, I was largely responsible for meeting taxpayers, conducting audits, and making decisions.
  2. Hands-On Learning: Every case was different, and I learned not just about tax regulations but also about negotiation, problem-solving, and understanding diverse financial scenarios.
  3. Diverse Perspectives: Working with a variety of people—from rural farmers to urban entrepreneurs—opened my eyes to different ways of living and working.

A Career Foundation That Lasts

My time at the IRS was a short chapter of my career, but the lessons I learned continue to serve me as a tax attorney. If you’re exploring a career in tax, law, or accounting, don’t overlook the opportunities government work can provide. The experience will not only bolster your technical expertise but also help you understand people and businesses on a deeper level.

If you have questions about working for the IRS or starting a career in tax law, I’d love to hear from you. Keep an eye out for future posts where I’ll share more insights about my time with the IRS and the world of tax law.
